So you are about ready to close on your house. Here are some quirky things about homeownership you might want to keep in mind.
Future taxes - Your taxes could and probably will go up next year. If you bought a brand new home you can be assured that they will go up as the year you bought the home the taxes were taxed on raw land with unfinished construction. Even if you bought a re-sale home there is a very good chance your taxes will go up. Harris and Montgomery Counties are very good at re-assessing our values on a yearly basis and yes they almost always go up. You will get the opportunity to contest them if you think you are being taxed unfairly.
Maintenance - There's really not much quirky about maintenance. I'm just mentioning it because I see so many houses that are not maintained. Part of homeownership is maintaining your home. This is ONGOING!! Remember those houses you looked at that were not in great condition. That is what happens if you don't keep on top of maintaining your home. I have seen homes that were just a few years old that had not been maintained and they looked 10 years old because of it.
Surprise Quirks - Don't be surprised if you find some quirky things once you get in to your home. We built brand new and had the builder re-wire much of our house. We move in and I go to turn on the light in the pantry to find out there is not a light to turn on. The pantry was not wired for a light. Who in their right mind builds a house and doesn't put a light in the pantry. Almost everyone that I talk to has some little quirky thing they find out about their house once they move in, so don't be surprised if you find a surprise.
We are blessed to live in a country where home ownership is still affordable but it also comes with added responsibilities. I hope you enjoy your new home but wanted to make you aware of a few quirks you might run into along the way.
