Fellow Active Rainer Liz Carter had a double lung and kidney transplant a week ago Thursday. At the time I wrote a post asking for prayers; this post is an update to what has transpired. If you missed my first post here it is so you can get up to speed.
I spoke to Liz's husband Bill this morning and she has had a bit of a set back. Everything was going very good and they were sitting her up for the first time on Monday when she had a series of mild strokes. At the time it happened she was still in ICU and the lung Doctors were just making their rounds so were with her just minutes after the stroke happened; which is quite a God sent! At the moment the strokes have left her arms and legs paralyzed and she also can't talk.
Bill had thought they were going to do a tracheotomy but he just sent me this in an email.
"I wasn't paying close enough attention about this tracheotomy procedure. In talking with the nurse this AM I learned that I have been putting out incorrect info.
The tracheotomy was to lessen the discomfort of the tube in her mouth, as long as she still needs the ventilator her ability to talk is not there. ONLY after the vent is removed will she be able to talk. A bronck test is now scheduled for 2pm today and will allow the Drs to more fully understand when they can start weaning Liz off the ventilator. The nurse mentioned that the notes from the overnight staff reported Liz had a restful night.
BOTTOM LINE...We do not want a tracheotomy..that would mean a long term commitment to the ventilator."
Bill said that she is alert but is frustrated that she can't move her body or talk. The Doctor's feel that she can make a full recovery but this has been a set back and will take time. The good news is that the lungs and kidney are functioning well. I guess it is not totally uncommon for a stroke to happen after this type of surgery but is a set back.
Please keep her in your prayers as she is going through this difficult recovery! I truly believe in the power of prayer and our fellow rainer needs our prayers at this time.
She is still in ICU in St. Luke's in Houston. Bill wanted me to reiterate not to send plants or flowers as they will just be thrown away. She cannot have them in her room.
Bill is sending nightly updates to a Bunko group that Liz is in and he is going to start copying me on the emails. I will put them in the comment section of this post and the previous post as I receive them. Thanks for praying for our friend Liz.
