Flag Day is celebrated on June 14th. This was the day in 1777 that the Continental Congress in Philadelphia adopted the Star and Stripes as America's offical national flag with the simple instruction:
Resolved, that the Flag of the Thirteen United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white, that the Union be thirteen stars, white on a blue field, representing a new constellation.
The picture above was take from our recent Memorial Day celebration at Houston National Cemetery. As you can see they are carrying our modern flag with all 50 states and the original flag with the constellation of 13 states.
In 1916 President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14th as Flag Day. It was not until August 1949 that National Flag Day was established by an Act of Congress. Flag Day is not an official federal holiday but it is a special day to celebrate our United States Flag.
Today the flag consists of thirteen horizontal stripes, seven red alternating with 6 white. The stripes represent the original 13 colonies, the stars represent the 50 states of the Union. The colors of the flag are symbolic as well: Red symbolizes Hardiness and Valor, White symbolizes Purity and Innocence and Blue represents Vigilance, Perseverance and Justice.
I think it is especially important to fly a flag when we are at a time of war. We started flying a flag during the first Gulf War and have pretty much flown a flag since then. We owe so much to all the brave men and women who are serving and have served in our military; protecting our country. I feel that flying a flag is just one thing we can do to show our patriotism and let them know we are appreciative of everything they do for this wonderful country of ours.
Please don't forget to put your flag out tomorrow. I do have a request though. If your flag is tired and tattered don't put it out buy a new one. This is such a problem I even wrote a post about Tattered flags in Spring TX. I have a feeling this is not isolated to Spring though.
I'm also going to give a short political rant. I have loved the fact that our commanders in chief in the recent past have always had flags behind them as they meet the press. I'm totally confused at what these yellow drapes signify in the present administration. I think I would feel better if they were at least red, white or blue but I really want to see the flags back! What do you think?
