Paraphrased from Wikipedia:

Who knows if this is fact or fiction but the tale goes that a French guide that was with the Lewis & Clark expedition, after trekking for weeks through rough terrain, came upon the sight of the Boise River Valley and yelled "Les Bois! Les Bois" and that is how Boise got its name.  In the 1820's what is now Boise was an area where French fur trappers set traps.  Most of the area is a high desert except for the tree lined Boise River Valley which they called "La Riviere Boise" (wooded river).  Like I said we don't know whether this is fact of fiction but we do know that the area was referred to as Boise long before Fort Boise came along.

The original Fort Boise was erected in the 1820's but was abandoned in the 1850's.  Massacres along the Oregon Trail led to the Army re-establishing a fort in 1963 during the Civil War.  The new Fort Boise grew rapidly and the city of Boise was incorporated in 1864.

Boise and its surrounding metropolitan areas of Meridian, Nampa and Caldwell have seen dramatic growth through the 1990s and 2000s.
