Porter County located in Northwest Indiana was formed in 1836. The county was named after Capt. David Porter a naval officer during the Barbary Wars and the war of 1812. The county seat of Porter County, Valparaiso was named for the naval action that Capt. Porter was in near Valparaiso, Chile during the War of 1812.
Also in Porter County you will find Chesterton which was first incorporated in 1869. A nickname for Chesterton is "Gateway to the Dunes". In the 1920's the Indiana Dunes State Park acquired land from Chesterton which ended up resulting in the Indiana Dunes National lake-shore. The Indiana Dunes National lake shore is a well preserved stretch of sand dunes, beaches, grasslands and forest.
Relatively new on the scene is the town of Portage. Portage became a town in 1959 and then a city in 1968. Compared to the other cities and towns in the area Portage is a youngster.
