Porter County located in Northwest Indiana was formed in 1836. The county was named after Capt. David Porter a naval officer during the Barbary Wars and the war of 1812. The county seat of Porter County, Valparaiso was named for the naval action that Capt. Porter was in near Valparaiso, Chile during the War of 1812.
Also in Porter County you will find Chesterton which was first incorporated in 1869. A nickname for Chesterton is "Gateway to the Dunes". In the 1920's the Indiana Dunes State Park acquired land from Chesterton which ended up resulting in the Indiana Dunes National lake-shore. The Indiana Dunes National lake shore is a well preserved stretch of sand dunes, beaches, grasslands and forest.
Relatively new on the scene is the town of Portage. Portage became a town in 1959 and then a city in 1968. Compared to the other cities and towns in the area Portage is a youngster.

Marchel, thanks so much for the terrific post. I have thoroughly enjoyed the lessons I've learned here on Active Rain. One that stands out foremost, when we challenge each other ... we all win!
From Naples Florida, I say "HAVE A GREAT VACATION"
Marchel - What a fabulous article about Steve and Portage Indiana. I agree with Steve, the posts here on AR keep getting better and better. Steve and I also agree about the opportunity for buying a home in Indiana. For Steve, specifically, homebuyers in Portage and Valparaiso have an excellent resource in Synergy Homes for their home. Steve's enthusiasm and commitment as a homebuilder is genuine!
Steve, I did not know you have white beaches up there. I will have to pay a visit.
Steve: I really enjoyed getting to know more about your area. I love your passion for getting people in to affordable homes and helping first time home buyers!
Some interesting information about Indiana. Central Indiana which hosts Indianapolis as it's core market, is one of the most affordable housing markets in the entire country. So, we here in Northwest Indiana, although moderately affordable ourselves, always feel like we're high in comparison to Indy.
My lifelong passion for providng affordable options for working families is further frustrated when we get families from Indianapolis.
Marchel,
Great job letting us know more about Steve Dalton and the homes he builds in Portage Indiana. The picture of the dunes had me going for a minute as I couldn't remember the ocean being near Indiana!
Marchel I have gained some real attention with this post, thanks again for the write-up. Today i was meeting with a young couple who even mentioned that they searched me (before they came in) and were very pleased to see I had so many real estate friends across the country.
