Houston Museum of Natural Science - A Spring TX day trip!

Houston Musuem of Natural History post gets the award of merit

One of the many things that I LOVE about living in Spring TX is the accessibility to all that Houston has to offer. If you are looking for something to do when YUCKY weather arrives visiting our many museums may be the answer.  Recently when our daughter was in town we re-visited the Houston Museum of Natural Science. We had tickets to see Bugs in 3 D at the IMAX but went early so we could also tour the museum.

Spring TX day trip - Houston Museum of Natural Science

We have visited a lot of Natural History museume across the country and have loved them all.  Houston's museum is not just Natural History but also Natural Science.  You won't want to miss the Weiss Energy Exhibit and there's also a wonderful collection of gems.  It is only appropriate that Houston's Science Museum would have a HUGE focus on energy.

I don't have pictures from our Imax experience (Bugs in 3D) but I can tell you it is well worth the investment.  It was a little pricey as the tickets were $11 apiece but we totally enjoyed it.  Bugs in 3D follows the life cycle of a preying mantis and a butterfly from their birth to their encounter in the rain-forests of Southeast Asia, where predator meets its prey.

I was not the only one there with my daughter; I saw lots of children there.  I was probably the only one there with my 28 year old daughter though (lol). Our daughter has always had a HUGE fascination with bugs.  While in college she had a Tarantula (Creepy Carla) and a millipede as pets.

Thanks for the memories!  We used to have a family membership to the Museum of Natural Science when we lived in Houston.  My daughter took many of their great classes during the summer.  I'm glad you had a good time with your daughter.  Mine (Jess) still enjoys trips to museums.

I love science museums.  We do not have one near us but every time I go to OKC, have to visit the Kirkpatrick Center!

Marchel, I loved seeing the pictures!  I enjoy our natural museum here in NY but it is so dark in there and I love the feeling of being outdoors so I don't go as often as I used to.  These were beautiful, if they have an exhibit like this I will be there!

Hi Marchel,

Thanks so much for the great photos. I just love places like this. Maybe some day I'll make it to Houston again and see it for myself. 2 weeks ago I took my grandkids to our local science/discovery museum, I love exposing them to things like this.

GARY, We are a museum family.  We have been to museums all over and still love to go to them.

RUSSELL, Thank you!  I love writing this kind of post; only because I LOVE museums.

IRENE,We were in Denver during my children's young years and spent lots of time at their Museum of Natural History.  It has those same fond memories for me.

JUDI, I have never been to the Kirkpatrick Center.  I spent plenty of time driving through Oklahoma City but never got to stop.

CAROLE, I have been to your Natural History Museum a couple of times and love it also.  My daughter has PLENTY of pictures from it also.

Marchel I would have hated to run into one of those big guys when they were walking the earth, especially during dinner time :) :) :)

Marchel,

Thanks for the info.  Next time my wonderful Mother is driving me crazy I'll take a trip there.

I visit Kingwood several times a year.  This would be a fun way to get out of the house.

Awesome shots, Marchel! I really love the rhodocrosite crystals - Not too far from here is the Sweethome Mine in Alma Colorado - it was where the most expensive, ie biggest! rhodo crystal  in history came from. Very enjoyable post!

IMHO it deserves a feature!

LYNDA, How fun to get to take your grandchildren to museums.  Hopefully that will be in my future someday.  Considering neither of mine are married yet it won't be soon.  My son does have a steady girlfriend though so someday.

GEORGE, Thank goodness we didn't walk the earth at the same time as they did.  They do talk about Leviathan in the bible but personally I just think it was a big fish.

MELISSA, You will have to tell me if you make the trip and maybe I can meet you there.  We have LOTS of musuems.  Shoot we even have a funeral museum.  It is up north here.

WILLIAM, We did run in to exhibits that said no cameras but for the most part they gave us free rein.

DEBI, I'm honored.  I'm still after that blue ribbon but I will take another red one (my second). I probably annoyed some people putting the award of merit on.  I only know how to center in HTML so I had to go in and out of HTML which meant several times of updating.

TERRY BONNIE, We did have a good time and totally enjoyed the IMAX.

MARY, I have only been to this museum a few times but I could not even count how many times I have been to Denver's Museum of Natural History (many a field trip).  I still LOVE IT!!

TONY, It was a fun day trip!!

REBECCA, Thanks!  Someday I hope to get that blue ribbon but it was exciting getting the red ribbon.  I grew up in 4-H (lol).

Hi Marchel, Natural History Museums and Natural Science is the study of life's origins. You certainly captured some wonderful highlights and kids ( of all ages) have a fascination with all things to do with life. I think it is in our genes, :-). The bigger surprise is that when I was in our Natural History museum in San Diego, I too was allowed to take pictures. So that now makes two museums where this would be true. Some of the best pictures in my collection were taken there.

Marchel

I am a past president of our local natural history museum here in Brazos County.  I bcame hooked on rocks and fossils and arrowheads when I was 8 years old. I secretly wanted to be an Indiana Jones and explore the ,  LOL....... so needless to say these museums hold a warm fuzzy place in my heart!

Marchel,

You sure captured some great photos at the Houston museum!   What I was most surprised to see was the the photo of the gem mineral you displayed on the last slide show.  Right after the lion head, was a photo of my favorite mineral, the rhodochrosite!   It looks like Debi also picked up on it.

Thank you for reminding me to put the Houston museum on my list of places to visit especially due to their amazing gem/mineral collection.  :)
