We have had a rough winter here in Spring TX. The picture above says it all. This story is repeated at home after home in our area. It is so sad to see all these dead palm trees. We are now starting to see trucks filled with dead trees. Look below and you will see this same home in a winter picture just a few years ago.

You can see that the palm trees were smaller but very green. We have heard so much about global warming in the last number of years and now that it is no longer warming we are hearing climate change. I decided to go back in history and found that in 1940 it actually got down to 5 degrees here in Spring TX. This is my personal opinion but I think it is just cyclical changes. So what do you think?

WOW, even the columns shrunk, LOL. Just kidding. Hi Marchel, this is so sad and I know these tress dying is a heart breaker. Nice photos BTW and a gorgeous home.
PS, I didn't mention in my comment about the global freezing warming. I have heard that much is this GW stuff is crap. In fact a few specialists are claiming that we are closer to an ice age. I bet the folks in Spring Texas would believe that.
What ever it is, the money changers climate changers say that the recent severe cold is perfect evidence of the earth warming. And there is a parallel. That you save money by spending it. hummm. What freakin planet are we on? LMBO
Marchel- Although the palm fronds are dead, the root of the palm may still be alive.
I often speak with folks on a local radio show here in San Antonio about gardening and we have been talking about the freeze endlessly.
They are saying we had several years of drought and abnormal warm temps that caused folks to believe we could have plants like palms etc live very well in our climate. They are calling this "climate change" a correction. We have to get back to native plants that grow well in our area.
I do not believe in global warming or climate change, I believe our ecosystem works in cycles, just like the economy.
Hopefully, Melissa is right, and the roots will bring these plants back to green again. I would have to agree that the weather is, and always has been cyclical. However, there is no denying the melting ice in the artic that is causing a struggle for the animals there to survive. The reasons for it, however, are up for grabs....
Debi
I'm listening to late night news as I write this, they say the drought is over! I know everyone had problems with plants dieing. Isn't it crazy to think palm trees and sagos are dieing. They are suppose to survive in sand, lol!
Marchel, I hope they come back too. To be honest, the home is so beautiful I didn't even notice it at first until I read the post. The trees are mature and the roots may be intact....I hope they come back!
It seems like so much of the southern U.S. has seen extreme cold this winter. We won't really know for a few years if this is cyclical or climate change, but even that may be a matter of perspective.
Hello Marchel and this is very sad and I guess that is how mother nature works. Very beautiful home with or without the trees!
VB ;o)
Mother Nature works in cycles............ just like the female body :)
Hey Marchel,
Seems to me there are a lot of things in question right now. Global warming is just one of them imho.
Well the scientists pretty much said global warming as originally reported does not exist.
Marchel my hubby is really into this stuff and what he said is that we really were on a cyle to head into the next ice age and what we should be having is a build up of ice on poles. So we're not warming in the sense that most people think of warming but we're not cooling as we are supposed to be. If that makes any sense to you. So it's not global warming in the sense of getitng hotter, but global warming in the sense that we aren't cooling as we should be.
Anyway, that is what he tells me per all of his reading.
as soon as I have time I will get back to post in your blogs, I need to go right now, but I just wanted to say hello :)
we have the same thing happen here - with our pine trees - if the frost comes too rapidly - we will see a lot of dead limbs - but they do come back
Record lows across South Florida are literally freezing the invasive iguana in its tracks.
Kamikaze iguanas, plummeting from their treetop perches, have long been a Floridian urban legend. On Wednesday morning, Local 10 caught the free-falling lizard on tape.
Marchel this has been the coldest, wettest winters in a long time here in our area of TX. However, I must agree, it is cyclical changes. Much like the drought we have gone through; now it is over and the lake is full again and the boat ramps are open. Hint, Hint, now you cand your hubby can come on over to Canyon Lake and go sailing.
Marchel, you guys have taken a hit this Winter. It will probably take a few years to get your trees and plants back to what they were.
WILLIAM, I wondered if anyone would notice those shrinking columns (lol). I did get the house at different angles. I like the first pictures angle but no way can I again get that angle with the trees living. I'm with you on global warming. I think it is a money maker for many people and find that very sad.
MELISSA, I'm betting these people are NOT going to wait for these palm trees to come back. It will be interesting to see what they do. I drive by this house several times a week.
DEBI, It has been crazy weather this year. It is so hard to know what to belive on all this global warming stuff. I just recently heard that the Canadian polar bears have dramatically increased and are becoming a bit of a pest. I have not paid any attention to the Artic thought to be honest.
CHRISTOPHER, It is so sad to see all the dead saga palms also. We all thought they would not be a problem. I only have one and the only reason that it was covered was because I was covering some other plants and it was beside them. I'm sure glad I covered it now.
CAROLE, It is a beautiful home and before this happened had a drop dead gorgeous yard also. I'm not sure what they will do. I guess I will have to post a follow up post when I see what happens.
JOHN, It has become so darn political it is hard to know but I do know that we are not having a warming this year. It is supposed to FREEZE here again this week. I can't believe I have to cover the plants yet again.
ROBERT, I do think this is how Mother Nature works. All these palm trees in our area were brought in here. For the most part they are not native plants.
MELISSA, I love the analogy to the cycles of nature and the female body (lol). I have heard and read the same things from MANY scientist!!
LYNDA, We do have a lot of questions about many things; global warming being one of the many.
MELINA, It does sound complicated. Personally I truly think these cycles have been going on as long as the earth has been going on.
RAY, Thanks for stopping by!!
THESA, I think these palm trees are dead unless they came back from the base and that will be a very long time as they are not a fast growing tree. In all truthfulness I don't think they are native to our area. I'm sure we will bring them back in again though. We have been here 14 years and this was a first and from talking to other people it goes way back from that. I did some research and found it got down to 5 degrees in 1940 so I guess it could be worse. GREAT to see you!!
NICHOLAS, I head Rush talking about this a few weeks ago. Just like our palm trees your Iguana's have been brought in and I guess mother nature is taking care of your problem.
CARL & CEIL, Who knows maybe we will come to the Wurstfest Regatta again this fall. I love your Canyon Lake! I'm glad to hear it is full again. IS THIS WINTER EVER GOING TO END! I will be covering plants again tomorrow. This is getting old! I thought about letting them go but then look at the poor ones I did not cover and it motivates me.
GEORGE, Between Hurricane Ike last year and the winter this year our foliage has taken a HUGE HIT!! We ate outside this evening but it is supposed to sleet on Tuesday. GOOD GRIEF!!
It'd be a shame to lose those palm trees. I hope they come back once things warm up.
Marchel ~ I love Palm Trees and would hat to see a great loss. I think we just have weather cycles and no so sure about the global warming thing.
Marchel what a shame about the trees. I didn't realize that they were dead. I thought once it warmed up they would come back. What a beautiful home that is!
Marchel
I hate losing any trees. They are what makes landscaping ...the final touch! I think this is just another cycle.
Well if the palms made it through the last one, they might not make it through tonight.
Chance of snow in San Antonio, although Spring is 4 hours away (3 the way my Mother drives) we are in for another blast of cold that our tropical plants just cannot tolerate.
There is basically unanimous agreement among scientists who study climates that global warming is for real. In fact a new study was just published on this two days ago.
The in-laws in San Antonio are mourning the loss of many, many plants, including some large palms. Fortunately they have an enormous Live Oak that shades much of their driveway, and front of their house, so all of the greenery is not gone.
Marchel Our ground is so saturated from 56" of melting snow trees are falling over. We are expecting 4 more inches tonight. This winter has been terrible throughout the c0untry
Marchel, we have a lot of palm trees here that look like the ones in front of this house. Being near water helps. We are on a pond and a half block from mile-wide water, so our trees have been spared except for some leaves at the ends...
Marchel palm trees can't stand the cold; it is a shame they died and very costly for the home owners.
Hi Marchel, I hate to see any tree perish! Whether we want to admit it or not, our climates are changing, I haven't a clue as to why, or what we should call it - but we are seeing the evidence of it everywhere. It may be a cycle, but I'm not sure where that cycle will take us. Ihope some of the palms will come back, as others have suggested they might.
Marchel - I can never remember a winter such as this one. Before I went to Florida to escape, a few weeks ago, I looked out in my yard and witnessed total devastation from freeze and bad weather. I emptied all the flower pots, and stacked them up waiting for another day.
My Florida friend had been asking me to visit her in Florida to escape it all. But, in January they were experiencing citrus freezes, and as Nicholas mentioned in his comment, the lizards were falling out of trees. I finally told her to give me a call once the Iguanas return to the branches. That was in the early weeks of February. It was really good to get away for those 9 days. It was horrible to return to the same stuff here in Sacramento however. This winter has a word for it. . .RELENTLESS!
IRENE, I don't think the palm trees will come back. I understand when the tops are gone they are gone. I expect they will all be starting over.
MONIQUE, I think it is probably weather cycles also. I can remember many a yuck winter when I was young and then mild winters and I guess we are back to YUCK.
DEBRA, It is sad that the trees don't come back.
TREY, I hate losing trees also but I think it is just the cycles of nature also. Those palm trees are not native to our area.
MELISSA, We did have more snow! I hope this is it! I'm ready for Spring.
GAIL, I think there are probably as many scientist that say it has not been supported as there are that say it has. One of the major scientist in Huntsville Alabama does not think it is for real. His name is Roy Spenscer.
CHERYL, We are going to work on cleaning up all our dead plants tomorrow. I covered many of them but those I didn't are very brown.
KAREN, Spring is on the way!!!!!
JENNIFER, We have so many dead palm trees but I expect we will just bring replacements in.
MARY, I do think we have cycles in nature. I remember living in Wichita Kansas as a child and seeing snow, snow, snow. Then for years there was NO SNOW. Now they are again having snow, snow, snow. I'm 56 so the snow and no snow and snow again has happened over a fairly long period.
MYRL, We have lived here 14 years and this has been the roughest winter. I did look back though and found that in the 1940's it got down to 5 degrees. At least we only got down to the mid 20's.
Marchel,
I am late here, but as I as promised as soon as iI had time to write something about I will be here ! :P
I don't know about the spring and these cycles, but that is a beauty ! :) it seems something very architectonic with a good art hand :P
Marchel,
That is sad... Winter here does not kill the trees.
Ann Hayden in Wildwood, MO
Everything seems to work in cycles and this is probably true of the weather, as well. JMO. Our palm tree in our back yard has brown fronds after all the cold weather.
At least you have palm trees where you live. Sadly there are none here in New Jersey.
