Last year was my first time to attend the Memorial Celebration that is held at Houston National Cemetery. Last year was also one of the most meaningful Memorial Days that I ever remember. I just wish I had made this a family tradition when my children were small. I an planning on going again this year with a neighbor as both of our husbands have to work that day. The pictures below are from last years ceremony. I'm sure I will have a new batch of pictures after Monday.

The ceremony is a beautiful tribute to our fallen soldiers. It was somber yet meaningful! This year Governor Rick Perry will deliver the key note speech. Governor Perry is a Veteran of the United States Air force. He served between 1972 to 1977 flying C-130 tactical airlift aircraft in the US, Europe and the Middle East. The event will also feature a parade of colors and wreaths by numerous local Veterans organizations, ROTC units & Boys & Girls Scout Troops. There will also be a flyover by the US Coast Guard, a performance of "Taps", a riderless horse procession, a white dove release and a rifle salute.
This is free to the public and like I said it was the most meaningful Memorial Day I have ever celebrated. We just lost a local Tomball Marine in Afghanistan and so this is a bit bittersweet. It makes me realize I'm one of the lucky ones whose son came home safe and sound after two tours of Iraq and is now out of the Army and a college student.
We have such a debt of gratitude for those who are serving in our Armed forces, those who have served and particularly those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Freedom is not FREE!!

Marchel
I often wonder if there really is enough time to thank all of those who served; freedom is not free and we celebrate in honor of those who did fight for us.
Marchel, sounds like the perfect way to spend Memorial Day. Look forward to pictures from this year.
We just want to thank all military personnel for giving us freedom in this country.
Hi Marchel, This was a wonderful post and a beautiful tribute that we must always be appreciative and remember those who gave all!
Beautiful photos. I pasted a couple from Arlington Cemetery on my facebook page this afternoon.
Wonderful post! Thank to all our men's and women's in uniform for their sacrifice, so we can be free!
Thank you for sharing.
Adam
TOM, Isn't that the truth! They give so much so we can have the freedom that we take for granted!
MARY KAY, We REALLY need rain but I'm glad that it is clear through Monday so the ceremony should not get rained out.
HARRY, My Dad is a Harry from the Greatest Generation. He drove a supply truck to the front line during World War II. At almost 93 years of age and still in great health I am so blessed to still have him.
WILLIAM, The older I get the more appreciative I get of those who serve us. It is our time to serve them.
CINDY, When I accepted your friend request on Facebook today I saw your pictures and they were beautiful!
ADAM, They sacrifice so we can live the life we live! Freedom is not FREE!
Marchel: We have so much to be thank for living in this great country. So many have given their lives so that we may enjoy our freedom and continue to pass on to our children and grandchildren and generations to come.
I think this is a very nice example of what memorial day means. I am looking forward to seeing more photos. Thanks to all who make sacrifices to that we can be free.
I applaud your community, Marchel for remembering those who served our nation and lost their lives in the line of duty, and for you taking the time to attend the ceremony this weekend to remember our veterans.
Marchel,
Thanks for your post this Memorial Day weekend. Dani is being re-deployed. Afghanistan this time. Pray!
Mike in Tucson
Marchel ... Fabulous pictures and a great tribute to the men and women who serve us!
Congratulations this post is now featured in the Silent Majority Group of Active Rain.
Hey Marchel beautiful post featuring this wonderful event. Have a great holiday weekend!
Marchel, it looks and sounds like an experience to behold! I will have to get there some day, just not this year. I am looking forward to this years photos!
Marchel: Great slideshow! I think every town should have an event like this!
Marchel - That's a great slide show, and very appropriate for this Memorial Day weekend! It is wonderful when communities take patriotism so seriously!
CARL & CEIL, We have so much to be thankful for living in this country and a history of our ancestors serving to protect us.
JOAN, I'm looking forward to tomorrow. I will have my camera in tow.
BRUCE, I only wish I had started the family tradition when my children were little. We moved here when they were in the 5th and 9th grade so we could have but just never thought of it.
MIKE, I will keep him in my prayers. It seems like he had just got out when we talked that time. Had our son stayed in he would be being deployed right now also.
PIPPA, Thanks! I'm looking forward to getting more tomorrow.
NICHOLAS, Thanks for featuring my post in my favorite group!
RUSSELL, I hope you have a wonderful weekend also. I'm looking forward to attending this years event with my neighbor.
TONY & DARCY, I wish I had started this tradition years ago but better late than never.
JANE, I agree with you. I honestly don't know if Denver has an event or not and we lived there for 15 years.
MYRL, I must say Texas takes patriotism to a level I have not experienced in the other states that I have lived.
Hi Marchel,
Great post and may we all remember the troops and make a tradition of thanking them everyday in person and in our prayers.
Marchel That is a lovely tribute and escellent video - thank you for making it
Great pictures Marchel. I don't live close to any of these type of cemetaries but your pictures brought me right to the ceremony. Thanks for sharing.
