Speechless Sunday - A Spring TX Chaste Tree/Bush!

The Chaste Tree - Spring TX

This Chaste Bush is in our back yard and at at the moment is drop dead gorgeous.  Now I have to be honest we had a hard winter and I was convinced that it was dead.  I tried to talk my husband in to taking it out but he said we should wait and see if it came back to life.  I'm glad he did not listen to me as it came back to life in a big way.

The bush has an interesting history. It is considered to be native to Southern Europe and to the Mediterranean.  It mainly grew along riverbanks but today it is used in our back yard landscaping.  Anciant Greeks and Romans believed it kept it owner chaste, with his sexual passions under check.  It was also assumed that the tree was capable of warding off evil.  It also has a number of different herbal uses.  Personally we just think it is a pretty tree/bush! It is a popular landscaping Bush in the Houston area and it must like harder winters because they are particularly pretty this year.

Marchel!  My neighbors have the twin to your Chaste Tree!  Theirs is in the front yard.  From what I read via the link to the different herbal uses, it is also known to "ward off evil."  Given my neighbors are 98 and 88, maybe something to that theory.

Marchel, almost looks like a butterfly bush on steriods! That is drop dead gorgeous. And aren't we all glad your hubby didn't listen to you! Give that man a pat on the back and a cookie.

Marchel- These are blooming in San Antonio. I've stopped and asked home owners what this bush is called & they had no idea.

Yay!  Now I can go buy one.  They are beautiful.

Gonna re-blog so everyone else knows what they are, I've been trying to find out for 2 weeks.

That really is beautiful. I love the distinctive colors. Although I don't buy into any of the superstitions ;-)

Marchel,

I've never seen anything like that around Maryland. I guess the winters are too harsh around here. Enjoy it while it lasts.

That is a beautiful tree/bush. I wonder if they grow here in N TX; I'll have to look for them.

MARY KAY, Wow neighbors at 98 and 88 that's just way too cool.  I'm still blessed to have my parents at age almost 93 and 84.  They are both in excellent health.

ANDREA, I'm very glad that hubby did not listen to me.  I spent lots of time cutting off the winter kill this spring so maybe that helped to make it so vibrant.

TONY & DARCY, I don't think they grow in winter climates as I don't remember seeing any in Colorado.

TOM, It is an amazingly beautiful tree and it must have liked our harsh winter this year.

MELISSA, Thanks for the re-blog.  Now you know the name and a little bit about the history.

Hi Marchel, I am pretty sure I saw this lovely tree today driving around town only before I didn't know what to call it.

Marchel,

What a lovely chaste tree. I had not heard of these before!  We thought our bottle brush bushes were history, too.  Not a green leaf left on them after the hard freeze...but now they look beautiful as well!

DIANE, I would have think that it would grow in Alabama.

CHERISE, I love the purple flowers also.  I'm curious how long they will bloom.

TERAL, I'm sure you probably did see that tree in the Dallas area.

DEBRA, Actually the Mediterranean is where the tree came from.  It would be curious to know how long it has been over here.

SONJA, We had a beautiful Bottle brush bush that is now just a tiny little bush.  I think it will be a long time before it is lovely again.

JANE, It is an awesome tree.  I kind of wish it was in the front yard and not the back yard.

PIPPA, I'm glad I listened to my husband.  I can bet your husband has been very busy.  I remember you being engaged but didn't realize you had got married.  Congratulations!
