The Cassowary is a very large flightless bird; native to New Guinea. Cassowaries are very shy, but when disturbed, they are capable of inflicting serious injuries to dogs and children. The 2007 edition of the Guiness World Record list them as the most dangerous bird in the world. In other words give them a wide berth. Our daughter took the picture on a recent trip to the Houston Zoo. I'm not sure how she got the picture without the fence in front but I guarantee you there was a fence.
Houston has a wonderful zoo. It makes a great day trip if you have never visited it!

Wow a very interesting bird indeed, but I can see he is capable of some serious danger.
I have never heard of a Cassowary... glad to know there was a fence.. You daughter took a magnificent photo of this bird. I don't think I want to run into one that is not behind a fence.
Never heard of a cassowary...........but it looks mean!
Marchel.
That is a great portrait of this bird. Such striking colors and those eyes. :)
Steve
Howdy and evenin there Marchel
Both you and your daughter, sure do always take mighty fine photos to share with folks. I have gotten to see a Cassowary before. They sure are a really fine looken bird, thats for sure!!!
Have a good one
Dale
Hi Marchel -- Wow, the colors on this amazing bird is absoultely brilliant. I have a healthy respect for nature, especially after being around horses and the damage they can inflict on an unsuspecting bystander and even experienced rider/trainer if not careful. My wife still has a minor imprint on her from a horse kick a few years ago!
This does look like a bird I would give a wide berth to, Marchel. It almost looks like a cross between a vulture and a peacock.
Marchel, The Cassowary looks a little like a turkey. Kind of intense looking – isn’t it? It’s a great photo – close up with great color.
Holy mackerel Marchel, that picture really startled me, it looks like some very scary judge in his robes and I would not want to be siting in his courtroom! ;-O
Very interesting colors on this bird. And yes, I can see the outline of the fence in front of the bird...
Marchel: What a magnificent looking creature. It amazes me the number of unique creatures in the world.
This bird looks as mean as a black Swan. I watched a black swan kill her baby with her beak. It was unreal.
Hi, Marchel:
The cassowary looks more like a dinosaur than a bird. He does have beautiful colors, though.
Cheers,
Robin
I've never heard of a Cassowary, either. But now I know that I should steer clear if I happen to run into one. His coloring is really nice, though.
Normally the inclination would be to try to coax a shy animal closer, thinking they're harmless. This one looks pretty serious!
Marchel, that is an amazing bright blue and the red on the Cassowary. Your daughter is an excellent photographer.
Marchel,
You and your daughter have a featured post on "Speechless Sundays." Congratulations to you both. :)
Steve
This is an awkward bird that looks like a Turkey and Ostrich....
I love his bright colors! I wonder if our zoo has any of these? I haven't been in years and am way past due for a visit.
ELLEN, He is a very interesting bird! I would not want to be on the same side of the cage with him.
JOAN, Isn't that a unique picture. You can just barely make the fence out!
ROGER, He does have a wicked look about him; doesn't he!
STEVE, His eyes do look as though they are staring straight at you. My daughter and I thank you for the feature.
DALE, This was my first time to see a Cassowary. Well the first time I can remember seeing one.
CHRIS, I'm with you. My husband grandfather had an imprint of a horse's hoof on his forehead.
BRUCE, It does look like a cross between a vulture and a peacock.
KATHLEEN, It does look a bit like a turkey; only brighter!
RUSSELL, I would not want to be his courtroom either. That's an intense STARE!
MICHAEL, You really have to look to see that fence; don't you!
JANE, We have a creative creator; that's for sure!
CHERISE, I had no idea swans would kill their babies. They look like such magnificent creatures.
ROBIN, He is a bit like an ostrich so dinosaur makes sense.
JIM & MARIA, That color of blue is my favorite color. He wears it well!
JOHN, It could be dangerous to try and coax this guy closer! I guess during World War II they told our soldiers in New Guinea to stay away from them.
GEORGE, I had my camera also but you can tell which picture I used (lol). I was trying to replicate her settings but mine did not turn out as good as hers.
JOHN, It does look a bit like a turkey and a bit like an ostrich but with the coloring of a peacock.
ANN, It was fun to visit the Houston zoo and I also had not been to a zoo in a long time.
Marchel what striking colors! The Cassowary is new to me, so thanks for this post.
What an interesting 'hat' that Cassowary is wearing Marchel. Have never heard or seen this bird before. Maybe your daughter poked her camera shutter through the holes in the fence LOL!
I don't know how big this bird is, but I always thought ostrage would be the most dangerous because of their size...but I guess that does not matter...great photo and thanks for the info :)
What a colorful chap. My son sings a song about a Cassowary which I thought was a fictitious bird!!!
JENNIFER, Isn't it amazing the colors God puts on birds!
AL and PEGGY, If you look close at the picture you can see the fence on the bird. You have to really look. It does look like she is in with the bird. Since I read about how mean the bird is I'm glad she was not on the same side of the bird.
CAROLE, This bird is a little smaller than an ostrich but from what I read it is meaner. Ostriches can be pretty mean so that makes this one mean bird.
ELLIE, How funny! Now you have met the bird that goes with the song.
Marchel,
Congratulations on reaching the 500K mark in the Rain! We still pray for your son, and my niece Dani is being deployed to Afghanistan, so please continue to remember her to the Lord. That Cassowary is one amazing bird!
Mike in Tucson
Marchel,
He kind of looks like a turkey......
Nice shot!
Ann Hayden in Wildwood, MO
Now I remember this photo, and you are honest, you do give her credit! You must be so proud! I'll keep you posted on my latest creative adventure, I'm writing a novel.
See you in the Rain!
Ellen
Marchel It probably isn't big pet item in New Guinea, either. lovely bird
What a BEAUTIFUL bird! Such rich colors! I had never heard of this type bird either. Looks too pretty to be a threat. But then again, the prettiest critters are often the most deadly.
He's a peackey. Or a turkock (peacock/turkey) :)
Be sure to tell your daughter how much we all enjoy her photos.
That bird looks like it came out of central casting for "Avatar" Pretty amazing looking bird.
Marchel, Thanks for the education and photo of the Cassowarie. Hate to admit that I've not visited the Houston Zoo. Your post serves as a reminder. Thanks and congrats on surpassing 500,000 points!
What a really interesting looking bird!
Excellent post! Beautiful picture of interesting bird! I agree with troy comments above!
Thanks for sharing,
Adam
MIKE, Back at you! I had thought about writing a post when I reached 500,000 but so far the inspiration has not struck me. Not to say that it won't at sometime. All my milestone post have covered my son so we shall see. I will keep that niece in my prayers!
ANN, He does look like a colorful turkey!
ELLEN, You creative types keep me on my toes. Our daughter use to write these incredible emails about her worldwide adventures but then decided to say it with pictures!! She did not make it in corporate America as long as you did but she has always seen us work weird jobs with weird hours and I think it rubbed off! I'm sure you are so happy to be doing your own thing. She does not want to be a flight attendant forever so is still seeking what her own thing is. She moved all her stuff back here and now has a crash pad in Queens. She can have a tendency to be a recluse so it has made her be social. Now she has tons of friends in the area. Her latest thing is Dr. Who get togethers.
KAREN, I was reading that our soldiers in World War II were told to stay clear of them so it does not appear to be a popular pet.
CANDICE, God does seem to give those pretty creatures a distinct personality.
KATE, Will do! I took a picture of the same bird but my picture looked nothing like her picture.
TROY, Now that you mention it that bird would have worked great in Avatar.
DEBRA, He is for sure interesting.
ADAM, I had not thought of the Avatar connecion but I think Troy is right.
Marchal, what an amazing and vivid shot. I almost feel like I'm in trouble from that gaze.
Hi Marchel, I have a client on a street by that name. LOL. I wondered what it meant and now I know! Thanks.
Hey- I have one of these in one of my Facebook games. lol. It's on my Tiki Farm. I had no idea how mean it was. It looks kinda like a turkey... a little. I think I'll move mine away from the sea gulls in my game =P
Marchel - I see the fence it is closer that "that strange looking" bird ..... I'm sure you were glad the fence was there.
Marchel,
That is a very scary looking bird! What he giving you that look because you were too close taking the photo? I have also never seen a cassowary until I saw this very colorful photo taken by your daughter. Thank you for sharing this photo and for the info. I am worried about the cassowary (the most dangerous bird in the world) and if I see one out, I will make sure to keep my distance.
Beautiful picture. A long focal length lens (such as 300 mm) means that it sees past the things that are just a short distance away, so you don't get the fence.
Colorful close up of the bird!
Wow! I just saw this one on the Speechless Sunday oldies. It's gorgeous! Happy Fourth!
Wow! me too! I am checking out group features and this one is incredible. I never heard of this bird and it is so colorful children would naturally be inclined to come near. Thank goodness there was a fence.
Wow Marchel, not as cute as my penguins but very pretty distinct coloring. I think the fence is there but his/her red little "do jiggy" may be hanging outside the fence? Great shot though!!
Marchel- I'd never heard of that bird so thank you giving us a great picture and for some education as well. I'm from Houston and have a lot of fond memories of Saturdays and Sundays at the zoo.
