Sailing at Lake Conroe

One of the many things that we love about living in Spring TX is our accessibility to Lake Conroe.  We are in two sailing clubs at Lake Conroe and today Lake Conroe Sailing Association had a destination sail for lunch.  We had 5 sail boats and 13 people meet at County Line Barbeque for lunch. We had great wind and it was a fun time for all.

We started our racing experience on a 52’ sailboat with a friend in San Diego Bay. That experience was enough to give us the sailing bug and shortly after moving to Spring TX we bought our first sail boat.  We bought a newer Catalina 22 and we named it Sanity.  With real estate being so stressful I envisioned us relaxing on the lake.

However, once we started sailing my husband got interested in racing our sailboat.  We soon realized that our newer sailboat was pretty but it was also pretty slow.  Catalina 22’s are supposed to be a one design boat but they changed the design back in 1986 and the newer design weighs about 500 pounds more than the older design.   My husband tried everything he could think of to try and get our newer boat to compete with the older boats but the longer the race the more we would fall behind.

In 2002 the Catalina Nationals took place here in Houston at Houston Yacht Club at Galveston Bay.  Our son was supposed to crew but being a sophomore in high school he decided he had other interest so we ended up with a 13 year old crew member from another boat.  As I said the longer the race the more we would fall behind and so as the race proceeded we were in dead last.  It was a rough day on the water and my husband went on top to change the whisker pole as the winds had shifted.  At this point in time I was a fairly new sailor and would get my left/right confused; when you use the tiller left is right and right is left.  I was at the tiller and my husband said to go right; I went left and oops I knocked him off.  We had practiced man overboard and now I had to put it in to practice with a 13 year old crew member and in rough water.  We use fanny packs that have an air pack that can be deployed and thankfully my husband had it on as it took me two turns to get him back on the boat.  His clothes were weighing him down and without that pack I’m not sure he would still be with me today.  It was not a pretty experience but thankfully I got him in the boat.

After that incident I I told him if you want to race we need to have the right equipment; so we sold our pretty but slow Catalina 22.  We bought another Catalina 22 but this one was built in 1971 with sail number 501; it had been rigged for racing and had a racing history.   We named our new old boat INSANITY as it seemed insane to sell a newer boat to buy an older boat.  At the time we bought Insanity it was not a pretty boat my husband prettied it up for me and long story short we have loved our Catalina 22.

The picture above is not a picture of our sailboat as it is hard to get a picture of your own boat since you are usually on it. This is a friend’s boat that my husband often crews for in our Lake Conroe Sailing Association Thursday night races.  On Thursday nights my husband crews and I help on the committee boat as we keep Insanity at Conroe Yacht Club on the other side of the lake.  As you can tell from this story you don’t have to have a lot of experience to start your sailing experience.   As with everything in life the longer you practice the more experience you get.  Sailing has turned in to a wonderful hobby for me and my husband.  As your children leave the nest it is nice to have something that you can spend your spare time doing and for us that has been sailing. If you live in the Spring/Tomball/Magnolia/Conroe area and have an interest in sailing come out and join us sailing on Lake Conroe.

Hi Marchel, A wonderful photo story but I didn't mean to laugh as I visualized myself and the camera and not wanting to miss the shot as your husband is bobbing in the water. :-)

Well your friends boat looks just lovely with that gorgeous sky and the giant cloud! You couldn't have asked for a better setting!

Beautiful Picture Marchel:  I love the way the clouds seem to be just ahead of the sailboat!

Those clouds are so vivid Marchel and what a beautiful hobby you both have!

Such beauty with that sail boat Marchel, even if that one is not yours. A non motorized watercraft is great. You tune into the winds.

Lovely photo - I love the way you captured it with the cloud formations behind.  It reminds me of the boats along the Hudson and the Long Island Sound.  I love being so close to the water.  We have freshwater to the west and salt water to the east.

Marcel - talk about cutting it close to the photoblogging entry time - lol. Lake Conroe looks beautiful and you had perfect weather for sailing! Beautiful shot of a spectacular day out with your hubby!

Hi Marchel,

Spectacular photo, good luck in the contest. Also, I found your post really interestig and I had no idea that boaters/sailors wore fanny packs that had air pockets like that

Marchel: I've never been into sailing but after reading your blog I may change my mind as we have many sailboats here at Canyon Lake. Ooooops! Ceil just said no that we already have enough water sport hobbies. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Marchel,

I am so glad you have this wonderful hobby to share with your husband now that your children have grown.  That could be a good one for Scott and me - it won't be long!

It sounds so wonderful and relaxing.  Would love to do something like that!  I'm glad you have found something to take you away from work.  Since I just started my working career in real estate, I don't seem to be able to break free from it easily.  Would love any tips you could give me!

Nothing is better than a nice day on the water.  We have many lakes here, but I have not sailed
I am afraid I would get hooked on it.

Marchel-what a great photo with the clear day and the clouds. I lived on a sailboat with my fiancee for a few years. It was such an awesome experience!

Marchel--I am impressed that you did not let the one negative experience turn you off to sailing for good.  You picked yourself up and corrected the 'problem'----in an insane way, but you got it fixed! :-)  Good luck with the contest!

This photo is beautiful! Sailing has to take you away from it all! What a great life you have with your husband. I can tell you are truly enjoying life to the fullest, as you should!

I love your story. I know you have a collection of beautiful memories.

I wish you blue skies, clear water, smooth sailing and sun shiny faces always.

Hello Marchel and you know VB loves your sailboat photos and this one with the clouds is wonderful, and featured at one of my favorite groups at AR ...

Marchel, I only went sailing a couple of times when I was stationed at Ft. Meade, Maryland. I loved it but haven't sailed since.

DALE, I'm a fair weather racer (lol) but my husband enjoys racing with all the elements.

JOAN, Sailing was good timing for us as our birds left the nest.

WILLIAM, My husband would have REALLY been annoyed with me if I had dragged out the camera to get it on film (lol).  It was quite rough and could have been a dangerous situation.

JONI, Were those clouds incredible!  We actually had to cut that race short because of the chance of thunderstorms.

JANE, Those clouds were just incredible!!

SALLY, Sailing is a beautiful hobby.  Once we turn the engine off and take off with the wind it is just incredible! With gas prices the way they are sailing is a reasonable hobby.

Posted by Marchel Peterson, Spring TX Real Estate E-Pro (Results Realty) almost 8 years ago

GARY W. - There's nothing like a sail boat, when you turn the engine off it is so silent.  Hopefully there's wind LOL or it is REALLY silent.

RUTHMARIE, I would love to live between freshwater and saltwater.  In a way I do but it 1 1/2 hours to the saltwater and 35 minutes to the fresh water (lol).

KRISTINE, I had an hour to spare.  Now if I had known that you got 500 extra points if you were in by May 11th I might have got on the ball as I'm a carrot grabber.  In this instance I got real estate busy and knew what I wanted to talk about but it was hard to find the time.

LYNDA, After this experience we became a huge proponent of those fanny packs.  My husband would have had to disrobe otherwise as his clothes were weighing him down.

CARL & CEIL, Should you decide to get in to sailing you have the most AWESOME yacht club in your backyard.

LISA, It has been a good hobby.  It didn't quite turn out to be the sanity I was thinking about but nevertheless it has been fun.

JENNIFER, This summer I am heading to the mountains.  My husband and I have a trip planned to Alaska the first of June and the end of June I have a girls trip planned to Colorado.

DEEDEE, I have been in real estate since 1997 and I have learned the hard way if you want to take time off you just have to plan it.  I now plan my vacations and refer clients that come along during that time to other agents as something is better than nothing.  I learned that by losing clients trying to keep them until I came back; they don't wait.

MIKE, Sailing is a nice thing to get hooked on.  As our birds left the nest this has given us something to do together.

MARGIE, My husband tried to talk me in to retiring on a sail boat but I like my space.  I think I could do it for a short time but long term I don't think so.

PAT, It was rather insane to sell a newer sail boat to buy an older sail boat but that is what we did.

Posted by Marchel Peterson, Spring TX Real Estate E-Pro (Results Realty) almost 8 years ago

SHEILA, Sailing is a bit addictive!  It was a long winter we were so ready for sailing season to start and our winter is only a few months (lol).

SUZANNE, I hope you had a wonderful day; you will have to share!

PATRICIA, Sailing has been a great hobby to have as the birds have flown the nest.  Our young adult son now often crews for my husband when he is not too busy with school.

VEGAS BOB, Thanks for featuring my sailing picture.  That is quite the incredible cloud!!

MIKE, We got our start sailing in a large sail boat in San Diego Bay.  We watched a lot of big gray boats.

Old desert rats like me sure appreciate photos of the water, and this one's a keeper!  Love the cloud structure!

Marchel- I too thought the same thing before we left for our trip. We met a lot of people out there who were retired and spending it sailing around the world. Space is important though so depending on how big a boat you'd be able to buy, you might be better off on land : )

Marchel, sailing is so relaxing. I have never raced a sail boat, but have seen quite a few of them.  How nice that you and hubby have a hobby together.

Hi, Marchel.  I bet Insanity is yar.  It's great to hear that it has become a hobby for you and your husband. It's funny to visualize you trying to take a picture of your own boat while in it. :)  Beautiful shot of the white clouds, bright blue sky, and of course the sail boat.

What a great and relaxing way to spend some time getting away from it all. If I'm in your neighborhood sometime I hope you will consider taking my family and I out.
