In the current issue of PC World they give a section on 100 useful web sites. I found some of these to be really interesting. I am slowly visiting them and I am forwarding my favorites on.
This is going to be a series and the first are websites about Learning Stuff. I am only forwarding the FREE sites so none of these cost.
http://answers.yahoo.com/ I use Yahoo as my home page and have visited this site before. You can ask questions and then get answers back. I believe my question was "I think my cat has eaten rat poisoning; what do I do?" This was quite a few months ago and I didn't wait for the answer but went immediately to the vet. As it turned out he had not eaten rat poisoning but was sick from an infected flea bit. It is a cool way to ask questions and get answers though. Other visitors rate the answer on usefulness.
http://www.howstuffworks.com/ This site is all about learning how stuff works. You can learn about the history of NASCAR or find out about vulture vomit. We have vultures that hang out at our Yacht Club and now hearing about that I will make sure not to scare any. Is a cyber war coming; this is the place to check it out.
http://www.instructables.com/ This is the site for the do it yourselfer. Find out how to make things yourself. You can find out how to make an ice pack vest for your horse or how to of braid your horse's tail. There's instruction on art, crafts, food, games, etc. etc. etc. If you are thinking green you can go and learn how to make your own LED light bulbs.
http://www.fixya.com/ This is a site for technical support, manuals and troubleshooting for consumers. Now this is a REALLY cool site. Say you are having problems with a lap top or a digital camera you can go and ask one of their top experts. At the moment I have everything running but there have been a number of times where I have needed technical help with my gadgets. With this site you can either post a message on the site or have a live chat with one of the experts.
http://www.livemocha.com/ This is a free new approach to learning languages. You can connect with native speakers around the world. This gives you the opportunity to learn, practice, share and connect. If you are planning that trip to Italy here's the place to start learning the language and the best part it is FREE.
http://www.about.com/ This one was not on PC's list but I added it as it is where I go to find out about just about anything. You can go here to solve a problem, get something done or make a decision. You can browse their channels or explore topics.
http://dictionary.reference.com/ and http://thesaurus.reference.com/ I have to admit these were already on my favorites as my spelling is not what it used to be. I often use the thesaurus to come up with a different name for the same word.
http://www.anywho.com/ You can find anyone here as this is your white and yellow pages on line. Thanks Fred Doleac for sharing anywho.
If you have some other website that fit in to the "learning stuff" category please let me know and I will add them to my list.

great info Marchel! Thanks for sharing. I have my yahoo IM working just great now and am back on high-speed internet - anytime you're ready to start in on our study again is fine with me....I haven't seen you on yahoo though.
Marchel, this is a great list. Some I had heard of, but not the 'fixya' and 'howstuffworks'. I'll have to put them to the test and see what I get back. I love finding out about new sites (or in this case, existing sites that I didnt know about... LOL) Have a great weekend!
Marchel,
I like the site "How Stuff Works." There's a program on TV called "How It's Made" that I'm addicted to as well...
Mike in Tucson
Marchel,
Great post of resources....I am interested in the How Stuff Works and the LiveMocha site. I have noticed that many times it seems that answers.yahoo comes up well in google searches if you type a question in the search bar, which I do.....so this could also be an opportunity to get your name out there associated with knowledge by answering questions.
Also, if I can add, if you have read a book (and Marchel I know from your reviews you read a few) take some time to leave a review on Amazon.com too.....it's another link on Google for you:-)
Great list, will check them out. Tech support is always difficult to find. www.anywho.com is a good cross reference tool. Fred
MARY, I have my yahoo hooked up to only come on when I turn it on as I was told it was causing my computer to run slow. I just found out about another program where I can have both yahoo and AIM hooked up (also from this same article where I got these). I will try to get it hooked up tomorrow. My last week of bible study is this coming week so why don't we start up then if that sounds okay.
JOHN, I was impressed with both of those sites. I sure in the heck didn't know about those vultures from the how stuff works site. I will be sure not to scare any, the results is really yucky! I loved the how to fix things site. I've always liked crafty things and this shows the how to make things. I've always been able to make just about anything but I need a set of instructions and this site has them.
MIKE, I often watch "how things work". I also like Modern Marvels. My daughter is in to the "dirty jobs" but sometimes that is kind of yucky.
REBECCA, I have never thought of using yahoo answers to get my name out. I guess I need to check that out. Yes, I am a big reader and I also never thought of using Amazon book reviews to get my name out. Thanks for the suggestions.
FRED, Thanks for the additional suggestion for Anywho. I have added it to my list. Personally I like having all these in one place as it makes it easy for me to use them.
Marchel, With all the info overload, we are on track to keep our brains forever young, right? According to a recent study online surfing is the best way to keep the brain cells in shape! Now if I just had a few more cells and a lot more hours for my workout!
G
These are really good resources to know about. Thanks for sharing.
Marchel Awesome references love it - will check them out to discover some new research tools! Love it thanks!
Marchel, thank you for this useful info. I'm the type of person that wants to know about things and usually just Google for info. I don't always find the answer though, I'll checkout these websites.
Marchel- I wasn't familiar with some of these, I will be using fixya.com when I have a problem. Thanks for sharing.
I love anywho & Fixya..Thanks for putting it together
Hmmm, that Instructables site was made for my dear husband! I've bookmarked your post--Really enjoyed it.
And don't forget the Grand Pooh Bah of all search engines...Dogpile...woof ! Woof !
BOOKMARKED FOR EXCELLENCE!!!
Great list, these are all very useful sites. I'll find some more for you to add. Going to add this great post to our sidebar now. Keep up the good work!!
Thanks for sharing abut all your resources, ay to early in the morning for me to even come up with one othr resource. Will get back and share!
Great stuff Marchel- I can use almost all of these, I will be using answers.yahoo.com when I have a question. Thanks for sharing.
What great timing - I just made a phone call for tutorials yesterday to begin learning spanish which was going to cost several hundred dollars. I just checked out LiveMocha - looks great and can't wait to start. Thanks for the great sites and keep them coming.
Hi Marchel, I bookmarked this post as a great resource! Congrats on the feature and have a good weekend!
GINGER, I'm glad to hear that on-line surfing is helping with our brain. I must be giving my brain a lot of help then. It doesn't seem to be helping with my spelling though. I used to think of myself as an excellent speller but not so anymore. I think I have become too dependent on spell check. Point in case I just misspelled dependent (lol). Then I misspelled misspelled.
BOB & CAROLIN, I thought they were good resources also. I have a lot more to go through from this article as I get the time.
LIZ,I lOVE TECHNOLOGY. It makes it so much easier to figure things out on our own. I always figure why re-invent the wheel if someone else has already done it.
Hi Marchel, I try to avoid techy magazines but this looks like a great list of interesting websites. I am already familiar with some of the ones you listed. thanks~
Thanks for the info, Marchel. I read magazines like this too and find that every month when they come I find at least a few good nuggets to check out and maybe make use of.
LIZ, Those are some awesome sites; aren't they. I'm slowly making it through all the rest of the sites. They have 100 websites and a good portion of them I was not familair with.
HAWAII HOMES, I'm one of those Google people also. Sometimes though I get a little too specific for Google and that's where this list fits in. By the way my daughter is coming through there today. She is a flight attendant for an International company and is on her way back from Australia. I will be glad when she lands there as she will be able to call me locally. It is rare for her to be someplace where she can make a local call.
Hey Marchel: great tips. I always love the techy stuff and the information available on the intenet. Thanks for the head's up. ;-)
I use Anywho.com all the time, but I'll have to try some of those other sites. Glad you did this post for us.
This is a nice list of resources Marchel. I actually learn a TON of stuff from Stumble Upon and following links on Twitter. Oh, and of course AR.
Nice tips Marchel. I never heard of the Fixya site before. Gonna file that one for the future Thanks
Marchel, what a valuable resource you have provided. I especially like the one on how stuff works. I used to subscribe to some Time Life books in that category.
Thanks so much for this information. I've added the links to my favorites.
Marchel, thank you. This is a bookmark post for me.
Marchel: I have used anywho.com for quite a while, and find that it can ferret out and help me locate people that many other sites cannot. Great post... thanks for sharing.
Thanks for these awesome websites Marchel! Funny you asked about a cat eating rat poison because my cat ate Decon last winter and it scared me!
Great list Marchel....Would it be okay if I reposted it on my site?
Thanks for sharing!
JENNIFER,I liked fixya also. My hubby is big on fixing things but sometimes stuff happens when he is at work or out of town.
RITA,I Loved Fixya and I have to thank Fred for anywho. It sure beats the big yellow pages; doesn't it?
DIANE,I loved that instructable site. I'm not good at coming up with something on my own but with a pattern I can make almost anything.
Thanks for the info. I am always looking for new sites to help me learn how to do stuff!
Great post Marchel. I read that PCMag issue too and have been trying to get picapp.com to work. It looks like a great concept and I have been back and forth with their support today. Check it out and let me know what you think.
BTW, bookmarked fixya.
SALLY and DAVID,I will be honest I have never heard of dogpile before. I just checked it out. I had some really weird statistics my newer website beat out my more established site in their search engine. I must say that was a FIRST!
CASTELLUM REALTY, If you have some other sites just forward them and I will add them to the post.
EVA, I am not a morning person either. If you have anything else please forward and I will add it.
CHARLES, Thanks!! I thought they were some great resources also. I still have about 90 more websites to go through when I get the chance.
JUDY, I'm so glad that livemocha looks like something that will work for you. How cool to save money in using it also.
RUSSELL, Thanks! It is always fun to get a feature but a little hard to keep up with the comments. My Vista has some problems with deleting what I'm writing so it sometimes takes a while.
SHIRLEY,I love Techy magazines but usually I don't have time to look at them. I just visited a friend in San Diego and took PC magazine with me and thought these were great.
MATT,I need to take time to read the subscriptions that I am taking but I LOVE the Techy magazines also.
TERI, I love the Techy stuff also. I love how much easier it makes our life.
MARGARET, I was not familiar with anywho until Fred told me about it. I can see it will be one that I will use all the time though.
RYAN, I have added Stumbleupon and have a Twitter page but I will be honest I have not really learned how to Twitter. I have lots of people I am following so I guess I just need to make a point of learning Twitter.
JUDY, I had never heard of the fixya site either but it is a cool site. I have had a NUMBER of times where I could have used it. At the moment everything is working but I have learned with technology that can change in a moment.
GARY WOLTAL, Talk about taking a trip down memory lane. I remember coming across a Time Life book about how stuff worked when my son was in grade school. I thought they were so cool I must have bought 5 to 7 of them and gave them as birthday presents. I think we still have one around here somewhere.
REBECCA, Thanks! I enjoyed them also.
DAVID, I'm honored that you would bookmark my post.
KAREN ANNE, I guess I must be one of the few people who didn't know about anywho. I'm glad to find out about it.
PATRICIA, I'm glad your cat was okay. As it turned out my cat didn't eat rat poisening but it was scary thinking that he did. My cat was very sick from a flea bite as it turned out. He is doing good now though.
JEAN, I would be honored if you want to re-post my post on your blog.
This is great! I'm gonna bookmark this and check all of them out. Thanks for sharing the good stuff. GBU!
Hi Marchel, now you have gone and given away all my secrets...I enjoy PC magazine they have some great stuff in there. Congrats on the feature Marchel you always have great posts and this is no excepion.
MARY B. I'm always looking for new sites also. It is an ongoing process.
DEBBIE SMALL, I have set up an account on Picapp. Am I reading this right; I can use any of the images they have on there and they are free??? What kind of a problem were you having with them?
That's such a great list of sites. I use most of them pretty often to learn things. I especially love instructables! Thanks for sharing Marchel!
ELIZABETH, Thanks! I love learning about stuff and I thought these were some great resources.
GARY WHITE, My ONLY problem with PC magazine is me taking the time to read it. I have taken it for a couple of years and get such good ideas when I take the time to actually sit down with it. This time it took an airline flight.
JASON,I was not familiar with instructables but I am now.
marchel, thanks I see some good ones on here, I was not aware of so I bookmarked and will take advice next time I need to find out something. I use ask quite a bit.
That is so cool. Thank you, I knew it was a good idea to subscribe to your blog!!!
MISSY, you are welcome. I have to be honest I put these together for myself also. I tend to bookmark sites but then can't remember what they are bookmarked under. This will make it easy.
JANE, Thanks! I'm honored that you have subscribed to my blog.
hank you for sharing these different informational sites. I like the idea of livemocha.
Marchel, Great info, thank you for sharing! The only one I've used on the list is about.com, so this is very useful.
CHRISTINE, Your welcome. I thought they were some great sites.
GAIL, Thanks!! I like having them in one place so I can find them myself. I save these type of sites to my favorites and then forget where I saved them.
Ditto on everything said above! Thanks!
CHERYL. Thanks and thanks for stopping by.
